He shouted, he chewed, he spat but in the end, he couldnt do what he truly wanted. Baltimore Orioles Gear . There was nowhere for him to hide. With much going on around him, it is hard to imagine a coach on the sidelines being lonely but in reality, it can be one of the loneliest places in the game. Standing on the side of the field in Houston on Thursday night, Montreal Impact boss Marco Schallibaum was a show in himself. Fortunately, as sideline reporter for TSNs broadcast, I had a front row seat. With the unscripted drama playing out on the pitch, Schallibaum stood powerless, at times, to the events unfolding in front of him. He told me in our morning meeting at the team hotel about that feeling he gets when he needs some of his players to be extensions of himself during the game. When the speed intensifies, he wanted calmness, some authority from his senior players. The decisions to play Nelson Rivas in his first game for 13 months and hand Matteo Ferrari the captains armband were attempts from the coach to bring the leadership from the side and on to the pitch. The attempts turned out to be nothing more than just that. When Ferrari got dragged out of position, lost his footing and left a gap for Houston to exploit for the first goal, Schallibaum turned in disgust and threw his gum to the ground. Fifteen minutes later, the ball was inches from him on the right side when his right back, Hassoun Camara couldnt find an outlet and gave the ball away. Seconds later, a foul in their own box, a penalty and a second goal left Schallibaum in tatters. He looked desperately for a replay of the Hernan Bernadellos foul and when he realised the stadiums video board wouldnt give it to him, I pointed to TSNs screen I had next to me for the replay. He waved me off. In a split second, the former player had gathered himself and knew full well it was a foul. He talked briefly with his assistants about the issue of the lack of outlets for Camara in the buildup and, down 2-0, now, more than ever, his players were looking at him. Constant misplaced passes were met by hand gestures and regular walks towards me with his back to goal. I got the feeling if there wasnt a stand behind me with fans in it, he might have kept walking. Back on the touchline, the coach gave RDS an interview on 30 minutes, as he does for all games, and one he needed to be commended for, considering what was evolving on the stage in front of him. At half-time in my interview, he tried to maintain some positivity but was unable to filter himself. A minute earlier, he was the conductor of an orchestra without instruments inside a drained dressing room of professionals who needed to be lifted. Time was running out and at such moments, he decided to react on impulse. There were no spreadsheet scenarios thought out ahead of time. This was on gut feeling, based around individual errors. When Andrea Pisanu cut inside and gave away another ball with a poor pass, Schallibaum signaled to his staff to call for Andres Romero. Soon after, still down 2-0, Andrew Wenger again lost the ball to centre-back Eric Brunner. Another signal came and this time, it was a double change. Schallibaum turned around again. He looked at me and, feeling the need to justify the changes, just said we need to get a goal! He was all-in at a card table with a terrible hand. It would get worse. Much worse. A red card for Rivas, a third goal for Houston, and a leg injury to Ferrari with all the subs used. There was still 20 minutes left and if he had a white flag, he would have raised it. Montreal were deflated, distraught and defeated. Schallibaum had nowhere to go. Fans behind us mocked him. "Doctor Phil says its okay to cry," shouted one. "Start the plane - time to get home to Canada," mocked another. Sport is a great theatre, one that brings out a whole range of emotions. The often emotional Schallibaum used this time to observe his silence. His players were not as reserved and a melee at the end saw two more sent off, leaving the Impact with eight men to finish the game. Eight men knocked out of the playoffs at their first attempt. It certainly was a nightmare Halloween for the coach and his team, and as Montreal traipsed off the field for the final time in 2013, their coach finally got to express his emotions behind closed doors. It isnt always easy to be yourself on the sidelines," he told me earlier in the day. Win, draw or lose, even like this; he still wouldnt want to be anywhere else. Cheap Orioles Jerseys . According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the deal will pay Schenn $2.25 million in the first year and $2.75 million in the second year. In 82 games with the Flyers in 2013-14, Schenn scored 20 goals and added 21 assists. Fake Orioles Jerseys . Wheeler scored at 4:58 of overtime, with Scheifele getting an assist, and the Jets beat the slumping Colorado Avalanche 2-1 on Sunday night. https://www.cheaporioles.com/ . Scheffler told The Associated Press on Wednesday he made the choice because he had three concussions over the past four years.Villanova, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - With stingy defense and a balanced attack, the No. 6 Villanova Wildcats opened Big East play with a 67-55 win over the Butler Bulldogs. Ryan Arcidiacono led Villanova (13-0, 1-0 Big East) with 15 points and five assists. JayVaughn Pinkston netted 13 points and Daniel Ochefu chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots. The Wildcats limited the Bulldogs to 35.5 percent shooting, including just 5- of-21 inside the arc in the second half. Butler (10-4, 0-1) was paced by Andrew Chrabasczs and Alex Barlows 12 points each. Kellen Dunham netted 10 points, but Roosevelt Jones was limited to eight on 4-of-15 shooting. Trailing just 36-32 at the break, Butler let the game get away from them in the opening minutes of the second half. Darrun Hilliard scored seven straight points coming out of the break to extend the Wildcats advantage to 11 points. Jones hit a layup to end the Hilliard run, but Butler made only two more shots from the floor over the next 7 1/2 minutes as Villanova extended its lead to as much as 16 in the second half. With Butlers poor shooting, the Wildcats could have run away for the game if nott for their own struggles from the free throw line. Stitched Orioles Jerseys. They only shot 13-of-22 at the charity stripe in the second half and 61.5 percent for the game. Villanova only hit two 3-pointers in the second half, but the second one by Kris Jenkins with 13 1/2 minutes remaining ran the Wildcats lead to double digits where it would remain for the rest of the game. Butler never led, but the Bulldogs hung in the game by dominating the offensive glass with a 17-3 advantage. They converted those extra rebounds into 11 second-chance points. The Bulldogs opened the game shooting just 1-of-10 from the floor, but back- to-back triples from Barlow and Austin Etherington helped them tie the game at eight just over six minutes into the contest. Game Notes Villanova improved to 4-0 against Butler ... The Wildcats have only started 13-0 one other time in team history (1937-38) ... Hilliard missed Villanovas last game with a concussion ... The Bulldogs owned an 11-4 advantage in fastbreak points ... Both teams play next on Jan. 3 with Villanova traveling to Seton Hall and Butler visiting St. Johns. ' ' '

MILAN - Lazio scored a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a 3-3 draw at home to Hellas Verona in Serie A on Monday and the clubs saw their Europa League hopes diminish. Quinndary Weatherspoon Jersey . The clubs are level on points, a point behind Parma and AC Milan, and two behind Torino, which occupies the last European spot. Later, Juventus looked to celebrate against Atalanta after Romas defeat on Sunday handed it a third successive league title. Substitute Romulo thought he scored the winner for Verona seven minutes from time as he was left unmarked to tap home Emil Hallfredssons cross with Lazio goalkeeper Etrit Berisha stranded. But Lazio was awarded a penalty when Michelangelo Albertazzi clipped Miroslav Kloses heels. Albertazzi was sent off, joining Lazios Senad Lulic, who was shown a straight red card minutes earlier for an awful challenge on Juan Manuel Iturbe. Stefano Mauris penalty was saved by Rafael, but the Lazio captain fired the rebound into an empty net. Verona twice fought back, with equalizers from Marquinho and Iturbe after goals from teenage forward Keita Balde and Lulic saw Lazio go in front twice. DeMarre Carroll Spurs Jersey . The Wild, playing their first game since leading scorer Mikko Koivu broke his ankle Saturday at Washington, have won three straight for the first time since Nov. 1-5. Koivu underwent surgery on Monday and is expected to miss at least four weeks. Manu Ginobili Jersey . -- Top-seed Shahar Peer and Canadian Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the second round of the inaugural WTA Citi Open. https://www.spurslockerroom.com/George-Gervin-City-Edition-Jersey/ . Thaddeus Young scored seven of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, Evan Turner added 22 points, and the 76ers hung on for their first road win since Nov. 1, beating the depleted Los Angeles Lakers 111-104 on Sunday night.AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Al Jefferson beat up the Detroit Pistons in a key game in the chase for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons are hardly the first team he has punished. Jefferson scored more than 30 points for the sixth time in nine games and led the Charlotte Bobcats to a 108-96 victory over Detroit on Tuesday night. He added 12 rebounds and seven assists, and sent Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe to the Pistons bench with foul trouble. "Hes a bad matchup for the entire league right now," interim Pistons coach John Loyer said. "We knew exactly what we was going to do -- they ran the same plays they always run -- but theres not much you can do to stop him." Jefferson had 24 points and 14 rebounds on Dec. 20 when the Bobcats rallied from a 20-point deficit to beat Detroit 116-106. "These games are what it is all about, especially with the Pistons chasing us," Jefferson said. "If you had told us before the season that we would be in this position, we would have been very satisfied. There are 28 games left, and were in the hunt." Kemba Walker scored 22 points, and Josh McRoberts added 14 points and 10 rebounds to help the Bobcats extend their lead over the Pistons to 1 1/2 games for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. "Our guys talked about it before the break, and said that everyone needed to do something to get ready for the rest of the season," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. "Whatever they did, they were all ready to go tonight, and it was obviously a factor." The teams will conclude the home-and-home set at Charlotte on Wednesday night. Drummond, coming off his MVP performance in the Rising Stars game on Friday, had 16 points, 11 offensive rebounds and 11 defensive rebounds for Detroit. That wasnt enough to overcome a terrible shooting performance by his teammates. "We didnt have the energy and concentration that I would have expected," said Loyer, who is 1-2 after replacing Maurice Cheeks last week. "Thats very disappointing. You cant let a good NBA team, and I think Charlotte is a good team, post that kind of start. "We had two good practices after the break, but it didntt carry over into tonights game. Patty Mills Jersey. " Detroit got double-doubles from all three post players. Monroe finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Josh Smith added 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Pistons shot just 39.8 per cent, with Smith making only 5 of 17 attempts. The Bobcats got off to a quick start, making their first seven shots. Only four missed free throws by Michael Kidd-Gilchrist kept Detroit from digging itself a bigger hole. Even when Charlotte missed a shot, the Bobcats got the offensive rebound and found McRoberts for an open 3-pointer. "It was very important to us to have a great start," Jefferson said. "We know how important these games are, and we were able to start off the game by setting the tone." The Bobcats free-throw shooting didnt get any better -- they missed 11 of their first 14 attempts -- but they maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second quarter. Charlotte was ahead 54-43 at halftime. Detroit could have gotten a point at the start of the second half, following a technical foul called on Walker as the teams left the court for the break. Jennings, though, missed the free throw. Detroit was outshot 58 per cent to 36 per cent in the first half, but Charlottes struggles from the line and eight offensive rebounds in the second quarter kept the Pistons in the game. The Bobcats quickly moved ahead 67-49 within the first 5 minutes of the third quarter, but Drummond was active enough on the offensive boards to pull Detroit within 79-67, heading to the fourth period. He went to the bench with his fifth foul with 9:47 to play, ending the Pistons run. Detroit also started missing its free throws, going 1 for 7 to start the second half. NOTES: The Bobcats are 2-0 this season against the Pistons with both wins coming at the Palace. ... Detroits Rodney Stuckey, a subject of trade rumours because of his expiring contract, went 1 for 9 from the floor in the first half and finished with two points in 17 minutes. ... Jefferson pulled off a rare feat when he was able to talk an official into changing a call. Tony Brown whistled Jefferson for a delay-of-game violation, but after a brief discussion, the call was overturned. ' ' '

OTTAWA - Susan Nattrass will lead Canada into the 2014 Commonwealth Games. San Diego Padres Shirts . The six-time medallist and seven-time world champion has been chosen as this countrys flag-bearer for the opening ceremony next month in Glasgow, Scotland. "Im ecstatic. It is such a tremendous honour to have been selected as Canadas flag-bearer," Nattrass said in a release. "I love the Commonwealth Games and will do my best to be worthy of this exceptional group of athletes that we have on our team." The 63-year-old, who makes her home in Edmonton, has won medals in womens trapshooting at every Commonwealth Games she has attended and is also a member of Canadas Sport Hall of Fame, an Officer of the Order of Canada and a former Canadian athlete of the year. "Susan has that rare quality of being both a pioneer in her sport, while still being a competitive, world-class athlete," said Canada chef de mission Chantal Petitclerc. "She will be an inspiration to all of us in Glasgow." Nattrass was the first woman to ever compete in an Olympic trap shooting competition back in 1976, finishing 25th against her male counterparts. She again broke the gender barrier in 1990 when she competed at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, as the only woman in an all-men competition. Nattrass successfully lobbied to have womens shotgun events included at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002 and pressed the IOC to include womens trap and skeet events at the Olympics after they were barred following the 1992 Games. The events were eventually added to the Olympics in 2000. The Commonwealth Games run from July 23 to Aug. 3. Padres Jerseys 2020 . Vettel has endured a difficult 2016 season and has recently been linked with a move to Mercedes. But according to Sky Italys Antonio Boselli, Vettel is likely to sign new Ferrari contract with the Germans commitment to the Scuderia showing no sign of wavering. I think he is happy staying with Ferrari. He has another year of a contract and then he has an option which will end in 2019 - and they might even continue until 2020, Boselli told Sky Sports News HQ.Vettel himself has dismissed speculation, including quotes attributed to his former boss Christian Horner in the German media, that he wanted to leave for Mercedes:Let me tell you, there is nothing to it. I am pretty happy where I am, he told the official F1 website.I dont think Im telling a secret when I say that all at Ferrari are not satisfied with how the 2016 season has started.Ferrari are yet to win a Grand Prix this season, with Red Bulls Max Verstappen the only man to break the Mercedes domination in terms of race wins.Vettel has also begun to slide down the standings, currently sitting in fifth place 70 points behind championship leader Nico Rosberg, and with his title hopes disintegrating. Perhaps surprisingly, he doesnt appear to be targeting wins immediately, instead focusing on getting back in the top three more regularly:Our goals are still high - nothing has changed in that. We are all determined to bring Ferrari back to where it belongs: up there on the podium. It is always possible to win - thats why we are here! If we already knew who is going to win it would be a waste of time, effort and money to come here.I am far away from calling [this season] a failure. I am very convinced that we are on the right path and to run through the paddock with worry lines would be the totally wrong thing to do. Vettel still has 18 months to run on his current deal with Ferrari after leaving Red Bull two years ago.The project Ferrari and Vettel have together is a long term project, said Boselli. Right now it is a tough time for Ferrari and Vettel. This year their beginning of the season has been rough for both. The car has not been performing as expected but I think the commitment is long term and Vettel will continue because he wants to achhieve a title with Ferrari because it is special, probably more special than with Red Bull. San Diego Padres Pro Shop. However, Vettels team boss Maurizio Arrivabene says its too early to discuss a new contract, despite being satisfied with the way they work together. He is happy to be with us and we are happy to work together, so I believe that its way too early to talk about this.Let us work on it, for sure this is our goal. Ferrari always face intense scrutiny in the media, especially in Italy, and rumours about changes in the team structure have been rife this season, with speculation that technical director James Allison could leave the team.Vettel says he doesnt know where things stand in terms of Allison, but admits he does make his feelings known about how members of the team are performing:You probably you all know more than I do. Lets wait and see.[Getting involved in personnel issues] is not actually part of my job description - but, of course, I make suggestions. Ive been around long enough to know one or the other person and of course things like that happen behind the scenes. You sit, you talk - one or the other name is dropped… But dont get me wrong: we have an enormous pool of talented young people in Maranello. SEATTLE -- Clay Buchholz felt exhausted after throwing only 76 pitches. Nmd r1 Norge . His return to the mound for the Red Sox after nearly a month on the disabled list was a test by an aggressive Seattle offence that had battered Boston pitching the first two games of the series. "They made me work hard," Buchholz said. "I knew they were swinging. Thats about the most aggressive team that Ive pitched to in my career. For the number of pitches that I threw that was a grinding, stressful outing knowing I cant make a mistake." Buchholz pitched into the eighth inning in his first start since late May, David Ortiz gave him cushion from the start with his 449th career home run in the first inning, and Boston avoided being swept with a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night. Outside of three batters in the second inning, Buchholzs return could not have gone much better. He was efficient, he pitched deep into the game to save Bostons bullpen and he relied on more than just two pitches. Buchholz was using just his fastball and cutter early in the season. The time away allowed him to work on his curveball and changeup and as his outing progressed, those pitches got better. Buchholz was so good with his pitch efficiency teammates were questioning whether the count was correct. "At one point I had to ask if the pitch count was right because it was the fifth and he had like 45 pitches," Boston catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "It was good. It was an encouraging outing and Im glad for Clay that he went out and pitched like he did." Ortiz knocked around Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma, plunking a two-run shot off the windows of the cafe in right field at Safeco Field for a 2-0 lead, his 18th of the season. He drove in another run in the third with a line drive off the wall in right that barely cleared the glove of Seattle right fielder Stefen Romero. "I thought we had a very good approach against Iwakuma, who pitches very well in this ballpark," Boston manager John Farrell said. Buchholz (3-4) was knocked around in the second, giving up home runs to Kyle Seager and Mike Zunino, but otherwise avoided problems. Buchholz retired 11 of 12 during one stretch and pitched out of trouble in the sixth inning when the first two batters reached on singles. Buchholz won for the first time since May 2. He had been on the disabled list since May 27 with a hyperextended left knee and after two rehab starts in the minors was brought back to the Red Soxs rotation. Buchholz went 7 1-3 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. He struck out two and walked none. He might have gotten through the eighth but Brad Miller led off the inning with a homer. Reliever Andrew Miller struck out pinch-hitters Willie Bloomquist and Cole Gillespie to end the eighth. Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his 16th save despite allowing two runners. "He looked confident, he looked relaxed," Farrell said of Buchholz. "He was able to make pitches with four different types of pitches. An overall outstanding performance." Iwakuma struggled for the second straight outing, his pitches missing location. Iwakuma (5-4) lasted just four innings, giving up eight hits and five earned runs. Iwakuma was done when he failed to record an out after the first three batters of the fifth inning. This wasnt the first time Boston has made Iwakumas night short. Last season, Iwakuma lasted a career-low three innings, giving up eight hits and six runs against the Red Sox. "I couldnt get the first pitch strike which cost me in a couple of at-bats," Iwakuma said through an interpreter. "They took advantage of that, so not being able to throw strike one got to me." He also served a five-game suspension over marijuana use and played in just 23 total games, averaging 7.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in his fourth NBA season. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.TORONTO -- The Toronto Marlies have enjoyed plenty of success so far in the 2014 American Hockey League playoffs, sweeping their first two series to secure a spot in the Western Conference Final. But despite their perfect 7-0 post-season record, the Marlies wont be taking their next opponent, the Texas Stars, lightly. "We know were not going to win every game," said centre Peter Holland. "If we are going to make it to the Calder Cup (final) and were going to make a push like that, we know were not going to sweep the whole way through. Thats just not realistic." Texas (48-18-10) is the reigning Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy winner with the leagues best regular season record. The Stars roster also boasts the leagues MVP in Travis Morin and Rookie of the Year in Curtis McKenzie. Morin leads the Stars in playoff scoring with two goals and eight assists in nine games, followed closely by Mike Heddens five goals and four assists. The series begins Friday in Cedar Park, Tex. The Stars, like the Marlies (45-25-6), swept their first round matchup against the Oklahoma City Barons and then used six games to dispatch the defending Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins. Marlies head coach Steve Spott was in Texas Sunday to see the Stars down the Griffins 7-1 in the series clincher. "Theyre the No. 1 team in the league, were an underdog, lets not kid ourselves, were an underdog," Spott said. "I sound like Bruce (Boudreau) right now in Anaheim, but we definitely are, were underdogs, we understand that, but weve been underdogs since Sept. 1 in this league." Spott, who was the head coach of the Kitchener Rangers from 2008-13 before joining the Marlies, has coached or coached against as many as six members of the Stars organization including forwards Radek Faksa and Hedden, both of whom played for the Rangers. "Theyve got depth, theyre well coached and its going to be a heck of a series," said Spott. "I think these are two premiere clubs in the league the way theyre playing right now and its going to be a tough series. I think weeve been searching for adversity. Carlos Santana Jersey. I think were going to find it and its going to test our identity." The Marlies were 2-2-0 against the Stars this season losing both meetings at Cedar Park Center. Toronto was out-scored 11-2 in the losses. Spencer Abbott and Josh Leivo each had three points during the season series while Marlies leading playoff scorer Jerry DAmigo had two goals and Greg McKegg added three assists. Drew MacIntyre, who has a 1.56 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage in the post-season, appeared in all four regular season meetings, posting a 3.00 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. An area of concern against Texas could be Torontos power play, which went 1-for-14 during the season series. In the playoffs, though, the Marlies have the top-ranked power play among teams currently playing at 25 per cent efficiency. "Weve really got to make sure our special teams are on top of it cause they can win or lose you games at this time of the year," said Holland. "Weve got to make sure our power play is scoring goals for us and our penalty kill is stopping them." Holland, who has four goals and six points in four games after missing the first three playoff games to recover from injury, didnt play in the regular season series. Spott says Holland is a key ingredient to the power play. "When you drop in Holland and you drop in Abbott, your power play becomes a lot better," said Spott. "What we do is overrated sometimes. We can put in the plan, but theyve got to execute it. "When theres something not there, Peter Holland can create something so I think thats what makes the difference. " Game 2 of the series goes Monday in Texas before moving to Toronto for Games 3-5 beginning May 28 at Ricoh Coliseum. Notes: Defenceman Andrew MacWilliam (upper body), who was injured in Game 3 of the Chicago series, will be a game-time decision for Game 1. Spott said forward Tyler Biggs has been battling a stomach virus, which caused him to lose 11 pounds in a 24-hour period this week. ' ' '

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Fake China Jerseys . -- Theres been so much talk about Mike Moustakas at the plate that the third baseman ignored the conversation Wednesday -- even after doing something positive. Moustakas hit a three-run double in the second inning to account for Kansas Citys only runs, and Jason Vargas and the Royals bullpen made the meagreoffence work in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies that completed a two-game sweep. Afterward, reporters peppered Moustakas with a series of questions about his decisive double, and each time he responded that Vargas pitched a great game. Moustakas steadfastly refused to address his own hit. "Its a big game for us against a great team. Feels good to go out there and get a W with the way that Vargas pitched," said Moustakas, who entered the game hitting .147 on the year. Moustakas did answer questions about his slumping performance during a lengthy session with reporters the previous day. But he was downright defiant when he was approached on Wednesday. He did talk about a nice play he made on defence, when he teamed with catcher Salvador Perez to pick off Charlie Culberson at third. The out came with the outcome still in the balance. "Moose coming up clutch was huge," said Vargas, who was perfectly willing to talk about the games biggest hit. "A big chance to put them in a hole early and we did." Meanwhile, Vargas (4-1) did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and did not allow a run until Drew Stubbs belted a two-run homer to left in the seventh. Louis Coleman got the Royals out of the inning without any more damage, and Kelvin Herrera worked a perfect eighth. Greg Holland then pitched a shaky ninth for his 10th save. After giving up a one-out single to Carlos Gonzalez and walking Nolan Arenado, Holland got Justin Morneau to hit a grounder to second. The ball was fielded cleanly and Kansas City got the runner there, but Morneau barely beat the throw to first base to keep the game going. Holland promptly struck out Stubbs to leave the tying run on third. "I think weve hit a little bump in the road here offensively," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Its safe to say that were struggling a little bit offensively. Weve got to go back home and get it going again. No doubt about it, weve hit a little a little slide offensively." Jhoulys Chacin (1-1) pitched six gritty innings for Colorado, yielding seven hits and two walks. The Rockies came into the two-game series swinging the best bats in the majors, but they were silenced by some stingy pitching. James Shields was their foil in a 5-1 Royals victory in Tuesday nights opener, combining with the bullpen on a 12-strikeout performance. Vargas was just as tough, striking out a season-high eight in 6 2-3 innings. One of those strikeouts proved to be especially important: Troy Tulowitzki was left looking at a called third strike in the fourth inning. The leading hitter in the major leagues argued with plate umpire Dan Bellino over the location, which appeared down and in, and continued their one-sided conversation when he reached the dugout. Bellino responded by ejecting him. "I felt like it was over once Tulo went back to the dugout," Weiss said. "He heard him say something and thats when he threw him out." D.J. LeMahieu took his spot in the lineup. And when the Rockies had runners on the corners in the sixth, it was LeMahieu rather than Tulowitzki at the plate. He struck out. "Sometimes you just get caught up in the moment," Tulowitzki said, "but to sit there and say do you regret doing that, no, because we werent playing well the last couple of games. Sometimes that lights a little spark in the team." NOTES: Royals LHP Bruce Chen (bulging disk) threw a brief side session before the game. At the 2014 Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston, there were some very bright minds discussing evolving uses of statistics and different strategies that can result; really, just from sharp minds discussing some interesting ideas. Tyler Clippard Jersey . Then there was the Hockey Analytics panel. Okay, it wasnt necessarily that bad but this was my fifth year attending and every year my sense has been that the NHL lags so far behind baseball and basketball in its adoption of analytic concepts that it can become a frustrating exercise. This years Hockey Analytics panel included Calgary Flames president Brian Burke, Boston Bruins Assistant GM Don Sweeney, Washington Capitals Assistant GM Don Fishman, Merrimack College Head Coach Mark Dennehy and stats analyst Eric Tulsky. The panel was moderated by Dale Arnold, from NESN. Houston Rockets GM, and Conference Co-Chair, Daryl Morey noted that every NBA team has stats analysts. In the NHL, there are a few teams that have staff positions for someone in analytics. The Tampa Bay Lightning, for example, have Michael Peterson, who was at the conference, doing work as a statistical analyst and the New Jersey Devils recently had a job for a Director of Analytics posted on NHL.com. Its no coincidence that the Devils new ownership group, headed by Josh Harris, is also involved in the NBA, owning the Philadelphia 76ers, so they come from a world where analytics is simply a part of doing business. (As a complete aside, it blew me away that the Devils, who have traditionally guarded information like the CIA, would publicly announce intentions to hire a Director of Analytics, the kind of thing that most teams generally tend to keep secretive and under the radar.) Part of what made the Basketball and Baseball Analytics panels at Sloan successful is that they didnt waste time discussing whether there is value in analytics. For whatever reason, hockey panels at Sloan insist on having a counter voice, one loud voice belonging to Calgary Flames president Brian Burke, that this sport cant be helped by objective statistical analysis. On one hand, its good to have dissenting opinions so that every thought isnt lost in an echo chamber but, given the state of acceptance of hockey analytics, it could probably use a more positive approach at an analytics conference. Burke started to acknowledge, "Statistics have value; ignore at your peril," he said, before getting back on familiar ground, "But its an eyeballs business." Its understandable when anyone has been in the business for so long that they arent inclined to jump in at new methods of analysis, but Steven Burtch had a good take on the tendency to rely on eyeballs. Its been said more than a few times, that use of analytics doesnt guarantee anything, which is an odd standard to apply since not using analytics and sticking with eyeballs, hunches and gut instinct most certainly doesnt come with any guarantees of success either. The funny thing about using analytics is that, somehow -- likely through the famous scene with the scouts around the table in the movie Moneyball -- there persists the idea that anyone wants to use analytics without actually watching players play. At last years Sloan Conference, Tulskys paper on zone entries was a valuable insight into the game and he came up with the data by watching the games in minute detail, providing real analysis on numbers that werent provided elsewhere. All the game-watchers in the world couldnt tell you how much more important it is to carry the puck into the offensive zone rather than dumping it in and, by quantifying the results, Tulsky showed that, all things being equal, dumping the puck in should be a last resort. For what its worth, I watch games differently having seen that data. There were several instances in which it was clear that the panel wasnt really up to speed on hockey analytics. While moderator Dale Arnold had researched Tulskys work, and knew to ask about Score-Adjusted Fenwick rating, they also veered into a discussion based on the premise that advanced stats dont capture the essence of a player like Patrice Bergeron, which is crazy because advanced stats do a superior job to traditional stats in that respect. Hockey analytics LOVE Bergeron. Where the panel lost its way, in some respects, is that when Tulsky discussed how modern NHL analytics are based on shot attempts, because that offers more valuable statistical evidence, there was no follow-up. No one argued the point -- because what kind of footing would they be on if they dared? -- but it was left to hang out there until the panel moved to a new topic of conversation. Some of those topics: - Fishman marveled at the clutch performance of some players, referencing Alex Ovechkins ability to score in key moments and noted thats what analytics miss about Ovechkin is his desire to have the puck on his stick with the game on the line. I think its been established enough, throughout the sports world, that clutch might be a thing that exists, but is entirely unpredictable. Like character, this is the kind of thing that gets assigned to players after the fact. The funny thing is that I used analytics to defend Ovechkins performance this season and I might suggest that the reason analytics may not capture the essence of Alex Ovechkin is that the most basic of stats, goals, does a pretty bang-up job. How far down the list of the leagues leading goal-scorers would you have to get before you find one that didnt want the puck on his stick with the game on the line? 50? 100? - So while I take issue with Fishmans stance on measuring clutch performance, Fishman also cited the importance of using objective data, as opposed to teams using their own measures because those measures come with more inherent biases. Many NHL teams talk about tracking scoring chances, which is fine but, from my perspective, the concern in tracking scoring chances is 1) its correlation to Corsi and 2) at no point have I been under the impression that teams track scoring chances league-wide, which means covering only games involving their team. That kind of misses the point of analytics in many respects. While its useful to have more data on your own players, you also get to see them for 82 games and every practice, so there shouldnt be any grand surprises about the value of players that you see that often. Applying real value to data, in my opinion, has to involve measuring players league-wide so that there are some comparable baselines and insights that might help in player acquisition or determining contract value. Its one thing for the Bruins to say how their scoring chance data tells them just how valuable Patrice Bergeron is; its another to have any idea whether or not there are comparables elsewhere in the league. - There was some brief discussion of coaching analytics -- Michael Parkatti had done some work in this regard -- and its probably an area ripe for further exploration. Burke, speaking from the executive office as a GM or President tends to cut his coaches some slack, saying "The coach starts the game with the players we give them," which is true, but that doesnt mean that there isnt something to be gleaned about how a coach can affect a teams puck possession. Sweeney, who played 1223 regular season and playoff games for the Bruins and Stars, noted that players are visual learners and need to see examples that merge with analytical insight. This is the right approach, merging analytic findings with real-life, actionable solutions. Its one thing to know, due to analytics, that there is an area of concern; its another thing to have an idea how to fix the issue and express it clearly to those that can make changes. - Burke said if there was an analytics package that he believed would work, hed buy it in a second: "Were all looking for that edge." Burke and Toronto Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis, his protege, are in lockstep - as both have publicly stated they will pay for analytics if they see value. They just dont see it yet. This goes back to the standard to which some hold analytics. For someone who freely admits hes made mistakes -- a function of a long career of drafting, signing and trading players -- its incongruous that Burke wouldnt see the possibility of potentially limiting those mistakes. Its not about being 100% right on all transactions -- analytics isnt about guarantees -- but if analytics made you "right" 60% instead of 55% of the time, then wouldnt that be pretty useful? Strangely enough, the Maple Leafs (represented by VP and Assistant GM Claude Loiselle) were one of a half dozen or so teams with hockey operations people in attendance. While the Leafs have shown a general disdain for analytics, Loiselles presence at the conference raises the question of whether they could be willing to learn a little -- at least to have a better idea what it is that they are so readily dismissing. - Not surprisingly, Burke is really big on the character of players they draft. I dont dispute need for character, but do think its subjectively over-valued and often assigned retroactively. The guy whose team wins or that has a long career is determined to have high character. Its one thing to tell a colourful story about Trevor Linden that shows his character and another to base hockey decisions on that information. Basically, there are plenty of guys with high character that arent necessarily great hockey players. As Houston Astros GM Jeff Luhnow noted on the Baseball Analytics Panel, "There is no correlation between being a nice guy or a good person and being a good baseball player." Ive yet to see the evidence to suggest that hockey functions differently. - Perhaps more interesting than the official Hockey Analytics Panel was discussing some of these concepts with others in attendance. In addition to Tulsky and Peterson, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas, Hockey Prospectus Editor-in-Chief Timo Seppa, as well as Michael Schuckers, Brian Macdonald -- both of whom have presented at the conference previously -- were all there to discuss and debate issues. You could probably have a more enlightened panel with some of the people in that group. Probably the most interesting discussion to me involved the merits of swing players, those who could play both forward and defence. After attending the Baseball Analytics Panel, in which they discussed the possibility of teams shifting their best defenders around the field according to a hitters tendencies, Dubas, Tulsky and I talked about how it might apply in hockey terms. Most recently, players like Dustin Byfuglien and Brent Burns are prominent players that have played both forward and defence; Sergei Fedorov took some turns on the Red Wings blueline and Christoph Schubert had that flexibility with the Ottawa Senators. Going further back, Rick Chartraw did it for the Montreal Canadiens in the late 1970s and while Paul Reinhart and Phil Houseley were primarily defencemen, they both logged some time at forward, as did Red Kelly as far back as 1960, so its not like its new to have players who can fit into the lineup in different spots. Our discussion, however, focused more on the idea that a team might, under some circumstances, go with four forwards and one defenceman in standard 5-on-5 play. Certainly, when trailing by a goal, it could make sense for the Jets to slide Byfuglien back on defence to upgrade their overall attack. While we debated the possibilities of how it might work, and what it might take to convince, coaches, scouts, players and agents to look at players in a slightly different way, the ultimate conclusion was that there could be real value in such a player, perhaps more than would be expected. Somtimes, the player who cant fit full-time on defence gets lumped into a fourth-line forward role (like Chartraw and Schubert) but having a player that is strong enough to handle both responsibilities could be a real asset. Anyway, the weighing of pros and cons with some smart guys made for an interesting discussion. - While the NBAs use of SportVu Player Tracking appears to be the wave of the future, there appears to be little appetite for it in the NHL to this point. Tulsky suggested that the teams that get in on the technology first may have the opportunity to gain a competitive edge but the margins will get decidedly slimmer if the technology was to ever be carried league-wide, like it is in the NBA. Once everyone has the data, then the advantage goes to the best analyst. - Tulsky says its hard to come up with a hockey version of WAR right now, but its possible some day. As someone who uses statistics to generate my NHL Player Rankings, I accept Erics positon, because it surely can get better, but I still find it useful to have a catch-all number to at least provide ballpark value on players. Michael Schuckers, who has presented at the conference in previous years, developed his Total Hockey Rating (THoR) in an attempt to come up with this kind of value. ESPN Insider NHL Draft/Prospect Writer Corey Pronman weighed in, via Twitter, making a point with which I agree: In order to do a proper stats analysis of a "player", need to examine 9-13 micro stats. Knowing how to combine & weigh is a bit of a skill. So, even if there is room for improvement on the Sloan Sports Conference Hockey Analytics Panel, thats almost fitting for a sport that has been slow to come around on the use of advanced stats. As Tulsky has found, there is progress being made and its easy enough to see how the trend towards advanced stats tilted in other sports so that, eventually, it will be part of standard business in the NHL too. Some day it will be accepted that having more knowledge at your disposal is better than less. Some day. Chase De Leo and Mathew Dumba responded for the Winterhawks, who suffered just their fourth loss in their last 46 games, a string of success running all the way back to Jan. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to let veteran running back Maurice Jones-Drew test free agency. General manager Dave Caldwell said Tuesday that Jones-Drew has "earned the right" to enter the market in March. Caldwell added that the Jaguars would decide whether to match or beat another teams offer. "This is his first time, hes been a great player in this organization, hes had a great career and hes earned the right to see what his value and his market is," Caldwell said. "And its our right to decide if we want to match it and bring him back. I think thats kind of where were at now." Jones-Drew, a second-round draft pick in 2006, has 8,071 yards rushing and 68 touchdowns in eight seasons. He missed the final 10 games last season with a left foot injury and played much of this season while recovering from surgery and dealing with a strained right hamstring. The running back made it clear Monday that he wants to stay in Jacksonville, but said his decision is all about money. He just played out a five-year, $31 million contract. The deal paid him $4.95 million in 2013. Jones-Drew also acknowledged Monday that he has a number in mind, but he sounded resigned to a potential move. "Hopefully I can stay here, but thats not up to me," he said. "Its time to sit back with my family and talk and see whats best for us. I have three kids, dont want to move them around, but if thats the case, then it has to be done. Eddie Murray Jersey. Well see. There are some other variables." Last year, the free-agent market for running backs was relatively soft. Detroits Reggie Bush (4 years, $16 million), Atlantas Steven Jackson (3 years, $12 million), Buffalos Fred Jackson (3 years, $10.8 million) and Tennessees Shonn Green (3 years, $10 million) failed to land huge deals in the open market. Jones-Drew certainly will want at least something similar, if not better. Then again, hes coming off one of his worst seasons. He ran for 803 yards and five touchdowns in 2013. Critics argue that Jones-Drew, who turns 29 in March, has lost a step and hasnt been the same since gaining 1,606 yards on 343 carries in 2011. They also insist his running style -- he welcomes contact and gains most of his yards between the tackles -- will shorten his career. Others, including Jones-Drew, believe he will return to Pro Bowl form once he fully recovers from his foot injury. They also point to this being his first season running behind a zone-blocking scheme and that he lost both starting offensive tackles early in the year. Caldwell, though, sounded like the team is ready to move in another direction. "I think we need to upgrade," Caldwell said. "Were always looking to upgrade all positions. Step 2 is to raise that standard of acceptance, and we do have to address that. We always have to have a contingency plan in place for all positions." ' ' '

OAKLAND, Calif. David Robinson Jersey . -- The San Francisco Giants have dominated the baseball headlines in the Bay Area since winning the World Series in 2010 and 2012. The Oakland Athletics have swiped most the attention back after taking over the best record in the majors this summer. And when the two teams met for the first time this season, both continued to head in opposite directions. Jesse Chavez matched a career high with nine strikeouts in six innings, and three relievers pitched scoreless ball to lead the As past the Giants 5-0 on Monday night for their fifth straight win. "Its exciting to be part of the Oakland Athletics right now," said third baseman Josh Donaldson, one of six As players named to the AL All-Star team. The As have been among baseballs best and most consistent clubs all season. Then they made a surprising trade to get right-handers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Chicago Cubs on Friday for three minor leaguers, including top prospect Addison Russell. Oakland also leads the majors with their All-Star selections, the clubs most since 1975. Sundays announcement didnt even include Samardzija, who was selected as a National League All-Star but is ineligible to play. The banged-up Giants, on the other hand, had lost 18 of 23 to fall out of first place in the NL West -- where they once held a 9 1/2-game lead over the Dodgers -- but showed signs of coming out of their slump by winning two in a row at San Diego over the weekend. Instead, the two-time defending AL West champion As put together the kind of all-around effort theyve had most of the season in the Bay Bridge Series opener. Alberto Callaspo hit a two-run double, and three others drove in a run to power the As in front of an announced sellout crowd of 36,067 festive fans at the Coliseum. The worn-down stadium had a colorful sprinkling of green and gold from Oakland revelers mixed with the orange and black of San Francisco supporters -- many of whom left before the final out. Chavez (7-5) allowed four hits and two walks to help extend the As record to a major-league best 56-33. Fernando Abad, Dan Otero and Ryan Cook shut down San Francisco the final three innings. "We all like to feed off each other," Chavez said. "Were just playing good baseball, and were excited to be back home." Ryan Vogelsong (5-6) lost his third straight start for the Giants, who had just five hits. The right-hander gave up five hits and three runs in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out four, walked two and hit a pair of batters, leading to the As first two runs. Oakland started its scoring surge after home plate umpire Paul Nauert ruled Craig Gentry was hit by a pitch on his hand leading off the fifth. Giants manager Bruce Bochy challenged the play, which was upheld after a video review. Gentry stole second, advanced to third on Coco Crisps bunt single and scored on John Jasos groundout for the As first run. Josh Donaldson also was hit by a pitch by Vogelsong on his left hand leading off the sixth. Nauert originally called it a strike before seeing Donaldsons hand swell. Then Nauert asked first base umpire Angel Hernandez if Donaldson, who said his hand was just sore afterward, swung at the pitch. Hernandez signalled no, and Bochy came out and had a heated conversation with Nauert after the call, wondering how it could be reversed. "Then it got ugly," Bochy said. Callaspo came through later in the inning with a two-run double off Juan Gutierrez to extend Oaklands lead to 3-0. Brandon Moss and Donaldson each drove in a run off Gutierrez in the seventh after Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford committed two throwing errors. The teams will play in Oakland again on Tuesday night before the series shifts to San Francisco for the final two games. NOTES: Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval, who left Saturdays game because of a bruised left elbow after he was hit while swinging at a pitch, sat out for the second straight game. ... Athletics RF Josh Reddick took batting practice and fielded fly balls for the first time since re-aggravating his right knee injury June 28 at Miami. ... Giants 2B Marco Scutaro (back) went 1 for 3 with an RBI single in his first rehab assignment for Triple-A Fresno on Monday night at Sacramento. ... Giants CF Angel Pagan was sent to Arizona to resume his rehabilitation from a nagging back injury. ... Williams withdrawal came less than 24 hours after losing in the final Auckland WTA tournament final. "I dont believe she has an injury," Hobart tournament director Mark Handley said.(SportsNetwork.com) - If the St. Louis Cardinals are going to advance to their second World Series in three seasons they are going to have to earn it. Tonight, the Cardinals will try to finish off the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series at Busch Stadium. That may be easier said than done, though, as the Cardinals will be going up against perhaps the best pitcher in baseball in left-hander Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw is likely headed toward another NL Cy Young Award after a remarkable regular season that saw him go 16-9 and lead the major leagues with a minuscule 1.83 ERA and an NL-best 232 strikeouts. The Cardinals, though, have given him fits, as he lost twice to them in the regular season and, despite a terrific effort, was defeated by them on Saturday in Game 2 of this series. Kershaw gave up an unearned run and two hits over six innings of that one to fall to 1-1 with a 0.47 ERA in three starts this postseason. "All we have to do is score for him," said Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. St. Louis, meanwhile, will be trying to secure an amazing 19th NL pennant behind rookie Michael Wacha, who has been spectacular this postseason, winning both of his starts, while pitching to a 0.64 ERA. Wacha was able to outduel Kershaw in Game 2 by scattering five hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings. Counting his last start of the regular season, when he came within an out of a no-hitter, he is 3-0 with an 0.42 ERA. "I just expect Michael to go out and do what hes done, just like the rest of our guys," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Stick with what youve done all along the way, and dont ignnore and dont deny the excitement. DeMar DeRozan Spurs Jersey. " Los Angeles staved off elimination on Wednesday, as Gonzalez hit two of the Dodgers four home runs in a 6-4 win at Dodger Stadium. Carl Crawford and A.J. Ellis also delivered solo blasts for the NL West champs, who hadnt homered at all in dropping three of the first four matchups to St. Louis. "I think if you look at it now, weve kind of become Americas team because everyone wants to see a seventh game," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Probably even fans in St. Louis want to see a seventh game, so I figure that everyones for us to win on Friday night." Zack Greinke (1-0) worked out of a bases-loaded no-out jam in the first, then limited the Cardinals to two runs on six hits over seven innings. He also helped his cause with an RBI single. "When Zack got out of that inning with no runs, it was just a huge momentum swing in the game," Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis said. "Sometimes a game is won or lost in that first inning. I think that first inning had a huge impact on todays game." Matt Holliday went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter each collected two hits in the loss for the Cardinals, who, of course, have lost an NLCS both times they have held a 3-1 lead, including last year to the San Francisco Giants. Unlike last year though, the Cards will play the final two games in St. Louis, where they are 25-6 since Aug. 11. "Were not going to San Francisco, were going home, so I think thats a big plus," Cards third baseman David Freese said. If necessary, Game 7 will be played on Saturday at Busch Stadium. ' ' '

What is the better QB-receiver combo, Drew Brees to Jimmy Graham or Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson? Scott Cullen: I prefer Drew Brees-to-Jimmy Graham for a couple of reasons. First, Graham has a larger gap over the next-best tight ends than Johnson does over the next-best wide receivers. Secondly, its much easier to trust the production of Brees, who has thrown a league-leading 110 touchdown passes (compared to 77 for Stafford) since the start of the 2011 season. Ben Fisher: To me, this one is easy. While Brees has a slight lead in points over Stafford among QBs, and Graham has a slight lead in points on Johnson, what makes it a no-brainer for the Saints duo is Grahams healthy lead in points among all TEs. While there are a number of players hot on Johnsons trail at the top of the WR ranks, Graham is by far the top TE this year (thanks in large part to Rob Gronkowski missing most of the first half with injury) which makes him all that more valuable. Mitch Ward: Really close call on this one. Individually, I like Brees a little more than Stafford but Johnson a little more than Graham. As a combo though I give the edge to Brees and Graham based on one main thing: touchdowns. Brees has thrown 21 touchdowns, 10 of which have been caught by Graham while Matthew Stafford has 16 touchdown passes, 7 of which have gone to Megatron. Still, you arent going wrong with either duo. Are you buying Chris Johnsons revival? Was Week 9 an aberration for CJ2K or a sign of things to come? Cullen: Of course, Fantasy Killer Chris Johnson waits until Week Nine for his first 100-yard rushing performance of the season. While I cant buy fully into any revival talk, considering his play over the last two-and-a-half seasons, its also notable that hes tended to have more big games in the second half of the last couple seasons. In 2012, he had seven games with at least 100 yards from scrimmage between Weeks 7 and 14 and, in 2011, he was over 100 yards from scrimmage six times between Week 8 and the end of the season. The Titans schedule is also conducive to decent production over the second half of the season, starting this week against a Jacksonville team ranked 32nd against the run. Fisher: Fool me once, shame on you… Johnson hasnt been the same back since joining the 2,000 yard club in 2009 and while fantasy owners have held out hope hell return to that form ever since, Im not one of them. Through nine weeks Johnson is a strong RB2 and thats just where hell stay. While I wouldnt worry about Shonn Green stealing too many points away from Johnson the rest of the way I also dont think hell push CJ2K to a higher level. Ward: No I am not buying into the Chris Johnson revival. One big game does not equal a turnaround. The 150 yards he pied up in Week 9 were more than he had in the four previous weeks combined and the two touchdowns were his first and second of the season. Johnson is still capable of big games, he had a few monsters last year too, but he is equally (if not more) capable of a complete dud in any given week. Ill need to see him string together four or five more good outings in a row before I start to believe that the 2009 CJ2K is back. I wouldnt consider Johnson as anything more than a solid RB2 right now. After another impressive performance, is Zac Stacy a legit RB1? Cullen: I have Stacy ranked 10th this week, at Indianapolis, so hes right on the cusp of RB1 for me. Obviously, his yardage in the last couple weeks stands out, but the better reason to hope that Stacy is a legitimate RB1 going forward is workload. He has 53 carries in the last two games and, with Kellen Clemens at quarterback, the Rams likely have to lean more on the running game than they might have otherwise. Fisher: Stacy is a hard player to figure out but after five straight strong weeks its time to give him the benefit of the doubt but an RB1? Since taking over the starters role in St. Louis Stacy has been averaging double digit points and went off last week for about 30 points. You cant expect that every week and the fifth-rounder, in a Kellen Clemens-led offence, will likely score closer to his Week 6-9 average and thats not quite good enough to crack the Top 10 running backs. Ward: Yes, Stacy has seen 27 and 33 touches in the last two weeks and theres no reason to think that trend wont continue if he stays healthy. Without Sam Bradford, the Rams passing game is pretty awful so they will have to continue pounding the ball along the ground with Stacy. Based on volume alone Stacy would be an RB1 consideration; the fact that Stacy is actually doing something with his touches (4.6 yards per carry this season) makes him a must start. The English Premier League kicks-off a new season on Saturday. Adidas Neo Lite Racer Norge . Manchester United begins defence of their 20th League title, while teams such as Chelsea and Manchester City attempt to get back on top of the league. Before the action begins, TSN.ca takes a look at five burning questions heading into the 2013-14 season. Can David Moyes and Manchester United keep their place at the top of the table as champions? Sir Alex Ferguson is gone. Allow that to sink in for a second, because while its been reality for an entire off-season and even during Uniteds victory in the Community Shield, the familiar figure will not be stalking the touchline at Old Trafford this season. Instead, former Everton manager David Moyes will take charge of a team that won the League by 11 points last season behind the power and poise of top scorer Robin van Persie and the most decorated squad when it comes to trophy-winning success. Moyes first transfer window in charge of the team has been marked by big money misses rather than captures, as United failed to pick up either Thiago Alcantara or Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, two players they were rumoured to have chased. They have also been linked to two Everton players that Moyes commanded during his time with that team in Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini; both players would bolster the United ranks if either/or were bought before the closing of the transfer window. There is also the saga regarding forward Wayne Rooney, who is believed to want a transfer from the club. He has been a major part of Uniteds success since making his own move from Everton in 2004. Hes even had past problems with Moyes, who sued the England international for libel in 2006 over the contents of his autobiography. Chelsea is Rooneys top suitor but United have rejected all offers and repeatedly said the player is not for sale. While turmoil has made the headlines for United this off-season, it shouldnt be forgotten that not only are they the defending champions, but they have talent and experience in their squad from top to bottom. Do not underestimate both the skill and impact of names like Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick and Shinji Kagawa. Moyes has a very strong squad, transfers or not, to start building his Manchester United legacy. Who are the biggest threats to the defending champions? Much like United, the other top contenders will be headed by first year managers. However, in the case of Chelsea, there is nothing "first year" about Jose Mourinho, who has returned for his second stint with the club after high profile work with both Inter Milan and Real Madrid. Mourinho in his first stint with Chelsea captured the Premier League, League Cup (twice) and the FA Cup. He is also a two-time Champions League winner during stints with FC Porto and at Inter Milan. He will, however, not be kicking a ball for Chelsea, but the men that will are both highly skilled and dangerous. To bolster its already-impressive attacking ranks, Chelsea have already brought in both Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen and Marco van Ginkel from Vitesse Arnhem. They are added to an offensive group that boasts Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and others that have proven they can score goals at the Premier League level. Romelu Lukaku will not be going out on loan this season after he spent last year with West Bromwich Albion. For Chelsea this is probably a good choice as his 17 goals would have led the team had he remained part of the squad. They also still have Fernando Torres and Demba Ba in the squad and - though the former has struggled and the latter is rumoured to be on the move - both have shown in the past an ability to be game breakers. Chelsea will be incredibly hard to mark this season and if they are able to add Rooney to that mix they could be upgraded to near-impossible. Another team under new management is Manchester City, who enter the season under first year man Manuel Pellegrini taking over from title winning boss Roberto Mancini. City has not been afraid to splash the cash and though last seasons crop of big money buys did not work out in defence of the title, the players they bought in this window appear more capable of fitting into the team dynamic. Fernandinho was purchased from Shakhtar Donetsk. He is a player with Champions League experience, who will be joining a team that failed to win one game in the competition last season. Midfielder Jesus Navas and striker Alvaro Negredo were brought in from Sevilla and forward Steven Jovetic from Fiorentina. These players will play alongside current City talent like Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, considered to already be among the best offensive threats in the Premier League. With Mario Balotelli already moved on, City erased another problem from their ranks when they sold Carlos Tevez to Juventus, ending a four year relationship that saw the former team captain win both the FA Cup and League title but also make headlines for row after row with team management. September 22nd is already circled on all City calendars as they will get their shot at United and a chance to prove early in the season that they are once again the team to beat. Who is North Londons best team? Arsenal is said to have lots of money to spend and during the summer claimed to be willing to move it for big money targets. However, on the eve of the season, the only addition to Arsene Wengers squad has been the free transfer of Yaya Sanogo. Meanwhile the list of departures is long and includes the likes of Andrey Arshavin, Francis Coquelin, Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho… just to name a few. They have played the big money transfer-request game, trying to lure the talented Luis Suarez away from Liverpool but so far have been unsuccessful in that endeavor. When healthy, Jack Wilshere can be one of the most dynamic players in the game but even at full strength a title chase will be tough to mount on his back alone. Wengers side is consistently counted out of Champions League contention but year after year he pulls the right strings to get his team into the top four and back into Europes top club competition. Without any major purchases before the closing of the transfer window in September he could face his biggest challenge to date. Meanwhile, Tottenham are dealing with their own transfer rumours but theirs are surrounding losing their best player. Last year Gareth Bale almost single-handedly pulled Spurs into a Champions League position, finishing one point behind North London rivals Arsenal. The entire summer was then dominated by rumours of a possible big money transfer to one of Europes biggest clubs, a move that has yet to materialize. With that still up in the air, its hard to know exactly how good Tottenham can be, or what type of squad is going to take the field at White Hart Lane this season. To their credit, they havent just sat idly by failing to strengthen the squad, Paulinho from Corinthians, striker Roberto Soldado from Valencia, winger Nacer Chadli from FC Twente and defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue are all now members of the team. Still the rumour of a 100 million-plus euro move to Real Madrid for Bale will continue to be the biggest story at the club until it is either completed or squashed. The immediate and long term futures of the club both hang in the balance one way or the other. Who is better poised to emerge from the mid-table Liverpool or Everton? Continuing the cross-city rival theme, Liverpool has finished below their neighbours two years in a row and must climb over them and others to regain a place in the Champions League. The saga of Luis Suarez dominated the summer for Liverpool, from the player asking to be moved on due both to unhappiness and a promise he claims was made regarding the teams failure to qualify for Champions League. That news was then followed by a strategic transfer offer made by Arsenal that was thought to activate a release clause in Suarez contract allowing him to leave the club. Finally Suarez reportedly told a paper in his native Uruguay, that he would prefer to remain at Liverpool because of the passion and support of the fan base. There is no doubt that Liverpool is better with the explosive Suarez than without him but the distractions he can cause throughout a season (or off-season) are immense. He will also be forced to sit out the first six games of the campaign to finish serving a suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last season. Liverpool did conduct business outside of dealing with Suarez and his associated rumours: Kolo Toure has joined from Manchester City, Luis Alberto signed from Sevilla, Iago Aspas has been added from Celta Vigo and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Sunderland. Everton will be under first year manager Roberto Martinez, who moved over from FA Cup-winning/relegated side Wigan Athletic. Striker Arouna Kone, defender Antolin Alcaraz and goalkeeper Joel Robles also made the move from Wigan to Everton rather than remain with the now Championship side. The aforementioned Baines and Fellaini will be massive in the success of Everton. If they stay they will be major impact players, if they leave it will be near impossible for Everton to continue their success as the best team that spends the least amount of money. Will any of the promoted sides keep their place in the Premier League? Since the 1995-96 season when the English Premier League moved from 22 to 20 teams, only once have all three promoted teams been instantly relegated back to the Championship. In 1997-98 Bolton, Barnsley and Crystal Palace were all returned from where they came at the conclusion of the season. So history says at least one of Cardiff City, Hull City, and Crystal Palace will keep their place among the top teams in England, parsing which one might be a little more difficult. Cardiff came up as the top team from the Championship and seem the best positioned to defend their place in the League. They made three significant additions to their team in Andreas Cornelius, Steven Caulker and Chilean international midfielder Gary Medel, all three signings breaking the clubs previous transfer total record. Crystal Palace sold their best player in Wilfried Zaha and are dealing with an injury to Glenn Murray. They also carry the distinction of having the worst defensive record for a promoted team since Sunderland in 1990. Hull meanwhile have their troubles at the offensive end of the field and if they fail to score in the Premier League the way they failed to score in the Championship, it is going to be a short stay in the top flight. We wanted to play a little bit more offensive, but we actually played with them, that was good for us.Canadas best chance, however, may have been negated by a non-call on Alexander Mejia, who appeared to take down forward Tosaint Ricketts.Ricketts received an excellent through ball from Issey Nakajima-Farran, but the call wouldnt go the way of Ricketts. Colombia toyed with the Canadian defence, but put nothing through for more than an hour.Colombia finally scored when a quick restart off a free kick in the 75th minute, it was one touch to Rodriguez from Juan Quintero, and he needed only one touch before driving a bending ball from 25 yards out to beat Borjan. Canada had no time to set up a wall, but Floro felt that was out of a lack of preparedness. We discussed this with the players and we told them Colombia were very smart, very quick, and a lot of the set-pieces they work on played the ball quick, said Floro. Our players got distracted and (the goal by Rodriguez) was what happened. Adidas Eqt Norge. After all of the fancy footwork from Colombia failed to beat the Canadians, it took all the might and craft of the worlds best striker to finally knock them down on Colombias fourth shot on target.University of Connecticut standout Cyle Larin had a scoring chance late in the game but was stopped by Colombian keeper Camilo Vargas. An ensuing free kick proved fruitless, and that was it for the Canadians. We had a couple chances, we shouldve scored that chance we have, but at least we got the experience out of it, Larin said. When this game was announced, I was amped, ready to play. James scored a great goal, and you cant take anything away from them.A loss is a loss, but the Canadians came away from the match emboldened.I think, as a team defensively, we played really good, said Borjan, who made three saves in net for Canada. Were still missing the attack, but we played the third-best country in the world, so I think we did very, very good as a team.We had to play well defensively. We have a very young team, inexperience, but we showed tonight that we can play together, and we improved.Larin agreed that the loss could be a learning opportunity for Canada.Theyre a great technical team. Its a process, and we played really well, said Larin. Hopefully in a couple years well be really good and be able to make it to a World Cup.With the loss, Canada dropped to 1-4-4 under Floro since his hiring in July 2013. Their next match will be against Panama in Panama City on Nov. 18.Note to readers: This is a corrected story. An earlier version reported that substitute Luca Gasparatto had Canadas lone shot when it was, in fact, Cyle Larin. ' ' '

PITTSBURGH -- Look who has the best record in the major leagues. Gerrit Cole overcame a rocky start to become the first Pirates pitcher to win his first four career starts in more than a century and the Pirates won their seventh straight, 10-3 over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Pirates moved a game up in the NL Central when the St. Louis Cardinals lost later at Oakland. At 49-30, Pittsburgh has the best record in baseball. Cole (4-0) gave up three runs in the first inning but no more as he made it through six innings, allowing eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Nick Maddox started 4-0 in his first four starts in 1907. "Its really a team effort," Cole said. "Ive pitched pretty well but Ive gotten a lot of support defensively and our offence has been very opportunistic. It feels good to say Im 4-0 but it feels even better because the team is playing well." The Pirates are on their longest winning streak since running off 10 in a row in 2004. The Pirates havent had a winning season since 1992 and the 20-year stretch of futility is the longest in major North American professional team sports history. However, they are not getting caught up in being in the rarified air of being 19 games over .500 in June. "Were just focused on winning that day," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "Our guys our very focused on taking it pitch to pitch." Johnny Hellweg (0-1) failed to get out of the second inning in his major league debut, giving up seven runs -- five earned -- in 1 2-3 innings. "He didnt come out with very good stuff," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "He was trying to aim the ball instead of throw it. That happens a lot of times when its a guys first time out." Starling Marte had a double and triple among his three hits, and just missed a homer in the eighth when he flied out to deep centre field. McCutchen had three hits, including his ninth home run, and three RBIs for Pittsburgh. Pedro Alvarez added two hits and Neil Walker hit a two-run double to start a seven-run second inning in which the Pirates sent 12 batters to the plate. Alvarez extended his hitting streak to 11 games Ryan Reid pitched three scoreless innings for his first career save. He was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on June 3 after spending seven seasons in the minor leagues. "Its really nice to get a save but its even better to help the team win," said Reid, who has a 1.00 ERA in six games. "I feel good about being able to come up here and help the team keep winning." Carlos Gomez, who missed the previous three games with a sprained right shoulder, had two hits for the Brewers. Jean Segura and Juan Francisco also had two hits apiece. Kansas City Royals Shirts. . Rickie Weeks ran his hitting streak to 13 games. Walkers double got the Pirates to 3-2, scoring Garrett Jones and Alvarez, who led off with singles. The Pirates then loaded the bases as Hellweg walked Travis Snider and Cole around a groundout by Jordy Mercer. Marte then singled home Walker with the tying run. The Pirates went ahead when Russell Martin followed by hitting a grounder up the middle that Segura, the shortstop, misplayed for an error, allowing Snider and Cole to score. McCutchen and Alvarez followed with RBI singles to knock the 6-foot-9 Hellweg from the game. "We had some trouble with (Hellweg) in the first inning," McCutchen said. "Hes so big and he was throwing sinkers from a downhill angle at a time when there still were shadows on the field. Then we got adjusted to him." Milwaukee acquired Hellweg and Segura, who leads the National League with 104 hits, last July from the Los Angeles Angles in a trade for ace pitcher Zack Greinke. Hellweg was 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Nashville this season. "I wanted to have a good pace, I thought that was important in my first game, but I really started rushing things, especially in that second inning," Hellweg said. The Brewers jumped on Cole for three quick runs. A walk to Norichika Aoki and singles by Segura and Gomez loaded the bases and Aramis Ramirez walked to force in a run. A second run scored when Jonathan Lucroy grounded into a double play and Francisco capped the inning with an RBI single. However, the 3-0 lead held up only for one inning, and the Pirates added on runs following their seven-run second. Marte hit an RBI double in the third and tripled in the sixth and scored on McCutchens double. McCutchen homered off Michael Gonzalez in the eighth. "I was on the ropes and the pitch count was getting up there in that first inning but I got some groundballs in the second, guys made some really good plays behind and that settled me down," Cole said. Could Melky Cabrera come back to Toronto after all? The Toronto Star’s Richard Griffin reported Sunday that the Jays should “not yet be discounted in the chase for the 30-year-old free agent left fielder. Giants Jerseys 2020 . Griffin reports that Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos set a price tag on Cabrera and that a lack of interest could potentially make the Jays’ offer to Cabrera the best once the market settles. Toronto submitted a $15.3 million qualifying offer to Cabrera, which he rejected earlier this month. However, they are believed to have tabled a multi-year offer that stands while Cabrera tests free agent waters. Cabrera is looking to cash in on a solid season with the Jays after spending the last two years in Toronto on a relatively cheap $16 million (total) deal. Despite finishing the 2012 season with a .346 average and earning the All-Star Game MVP Award, Cabrera was seen as a risky investment prior to 2013 due to serving a 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs to conclude the campaign. The Jays snapped him up at $8 million per, and - after an injury-shortened 2013 – saw excellent production out of the Dominican. Cabrera hit .301 (ninth in the American League) with the Jays in 2014 and was just four shy of the team lead with 171 hits, despite missing 33 games to injury. He hit 16 home runs and drove in 73. A 10-year MLB veteran, Cabrera has a career slash line of .286/.339/.415. Manchester United goalkeeper De Gea was on the verge of a move to the Bernabeu last summer, before the deal bizarrely broke down on Deadline Day.Courtois Chelsea failed to qualify for Europe for next season, and Balague believes the Belgian would be a fitting plan B if De Gea stays put once again. Spanish football expert Balague told Sky Sports News HQ: There is a private agreement by which Real Madrid could actually get David de Gea if they pay 50m euros. There is a time limit to that.Im pretty sure Mourinho will want De Gea to stay but it will be a decision that will involve both De Gea and Real Madrid. David de Gea was close to a move to Real last summer At the beginning of the season everyone expected De Gea to be the next Galactico but now the situation has changed, not only because Jose Mourinho has arrived at Manchester United, but also Keylor Navas has done really well.So what Real have done in recent weeks in case they dont get De Gea, is try to convince Thibaut Courtois to go to Real Madrid. The relationship broke down when they were at Real Madrid and Im not sure that will be rekindled.Theres clearly an offer from PSG to get Ronaldo. The game in this country just continues to improve and it will be fun to watch it all unfold starting tomorrow. Cant wait! 1. ANDREW WIGGINS (Kansas): This young man has incredible talent and upside with explosivity and skill to spare. Wiggins has terrific feel for the game and can make all the plays. His strength and stamina have been an issue on occasion, but he plays better when challenged. Wiggins has to play with a more consistent motor, but thats expected for such a young guy, whos handled all the hoopla of his frosh year quite well. Hell set the tone for how far his team goes. 2. TYLER ENNIS (Syracuse): Ennis is an intelligent and steady point guard, who makes all the high percentage decisions for you. He plays at a controlled speed and has excellent vision and feel for the game. His poise and composure under pressure is off the charts. Ennis changes speeds well and knows how to make others better with remarkable maturity and leadership ability for a frosh. Hes got to exert his will earlier in games here in the Tournament and get his team going and set the tone. Ennis is truly the straw that stirs the drink for the Cuse. 3. NIK STAUSKAS (Michigan): There are major improvements in Stauskass strength and overall savvy from last season. He can really stroke it and plays with energy and emotion consistently and is an excellent screen-usage guy and knows how to get open. The elevation on his jump shot is terrific and his handle has gotten better, allowing him to create for himself and teammates. Stauskas is coming on strong. 4. MELVIN EJIM (Iowa State): Heres an intriguing guy. Ejims a very good athlete who has good compete level and I love how hes able to finish on the break and play the game inside and out. Ejim attacks the basket hard and I love his energy. Hes gotten better every year, which is a testament to his work ethic and love for the game. Hes a beast on the glass and has really improved his three-point-shooting stroke. Ejims stock is really rising. 5. KEVIN PANGOS (Gonzaga): Pangos is a shooter with deep range and a guy who can get on a roll if you leave him open. Hes a gym rat who gets after it for you. Pangos isnt the biggest guy, yet plays as hard as you can ask and creates his shot well and has a knack for freeing himself up in the five-on-five game and you better not leave him open in transition. Pangos moves his feet and fights through screens on the defensive end and relishes the challenge of getting stops. Hes steady and reliable in every situation. In short, Pangos is a winner. Winners of two straight, the Flames will try to become the first team in 25 years to go three consecutive games without taking a penalty Saturday night in San Jose.NEW YORK -- Dirk Nowitzki called it "probably the ugliest game-winner I ever shot," and this is how he described it. "Basically it hit the board, every part of the rim, hit Jerry West over there (the logo on the backboard), came back over and it was definitely an ugly, ugly shot," he said. But when the 19-foot jumper bounced up and then fell in as time expired, the Dallas Mavericks had a 110-108 victory over the New York Knicks on Monday night. The Mavericks blew an eight-point lead in the final 90 seconds, then pulled out their third straight victory when Nowitzkis jumper that seemed to have missed instead fell through. "I didnt even feel like celebrating it was so ugly," Nowitzki said. His teammates and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban did it for him, rushing onto the floor after Dallas moved into seventh place in the Western Conference. Carmelo Anthony had 44 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks. He played strong defence on the Mavericks final possession, but was left standing in disbelief long after the buzzer after Nowitzkis shot appeared to hit the backboard first, then the front rim, then bounced up before dropping. "It was like a needle in a balloon right there," Anthony said. "It sucks all the air out of you. He hit a hell of a shot." Vince Carter made seven three-pointers and scored a season-high 23 points. Monta Ellis had 22 for Dallas (35-23), which has won nine of 11 and is a season-best 12 games over .500. Jose Calderon finished with 20 points for the Mavericks, who swept a three-game road trip and beat the Knicks for the 20th time in the last 25 meetings. Nowitzki had just 15 points after missing all five three-point attempts. "Thats one thing about the greatest players. I played with (Larry) Bird for three years. He took more pleasure in hitting a game-winning shot after he missed eight or nine in a row than having a great game at times," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. Tyson Chandler had 12 points and 12 rebounds against his former team, sparking the Knicks comeback after they trailed 108-100 with 1:37 left. But New York (21-36) lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell a season-worst 15 games below .500. The Knicks had blown big leads in their last two games, giving away a 14-point advantage at Orlanddo and a 17-point cushion at Atlanta, collapses that coach Mike Woodson called "mind-boggling. Texas Rangers Gear. " This one had to hurt worse. "There were games last year when our backs were against the wall and we just found a way to win," Woodson said. "This year when weve been in the situation where we needed a big stop or two we havent been able to get it done." The Mavericks seemed to have put it away when Calderon made a three-pointer, and Brandan Wright followed with a basket to stretch the late lead to eight points. But after Raymond Feltons basket, Chandler converted a three-point play, then came up with a steal to start a break that ended with Anthonys three-pointer that tied it at 108 with 50 seconds remaining. The Knicks got the ball back after a Dallas miss but committed a shot-clock violation, giving Dallas the ball for Nowitzkis winner. "We maybe shouldnt be in the situation at the end, I think six points up," Calderon said. "It was a good lead with 1:20 or something, but it was good at the end." Amare Stoudemire scored nine points in his first start since the end of the 2011-12 season for the Knicks, who had just 10 available players after waiving Metta World Peace and Beno Udrih earlier Monday following contract buyouts. The Mavericks shot 55 per cent and led 31-21 after one quarter, but the Knicks came right back and made 14 of 19 shots (74 per cent) while scoring 38 points in the second, when Anthony scored 17 points. New York erased a 14-point deficit to grab a two-point lead on Anthonys jumper with 11 seconds left, but Ellis made a three-pointer as time expired to give Dallas a 60-59 edge. Dallas had the lead back up to eight in the final minute of the third, but Anthony made three free throws, then nailed a three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining as the Knicks trimmed it to 84-82. NOTES: Woodson said he would talk with team president Steve Mills on Tuesday to discuss filling the teams open roster spots. He said he thought the Knicks needed a big man with Andrea Bargnani and Kenyon Martin still injured, and a guard who could defend on the perimeter. ... I dont know if Ill do slalom again. Its difficult starting in the back. But well see. I havent skied slalom since my injuries, so I dont know how it feels yet.Vonns previous World Cup victory was in GS on Jan. 26, 2013, in Maribor, Slovenia, and she has raced only seven races since.Less than two months after that win, she injured her right knee in a heavy fall at the world championships.Desperate to get back in time for the Sochi Games, she partially tore one of the reconstructed ligaments in a training crash in Copper Mountain, Colorado.Again, she attempted to grind things out, only to sprain her MCL racing downhill in Val dIsere last December, and had a second surgery a month later.Im in a much different position this year than I was last year, Vonn said. I have a healthy knee finally. So Im looking forward to the races this weekend and hopefully the conditions will be good.It has been a big month.Racing downhilll for the first time since hurting her knee again in Val dIsere, Vonn finished eighth at Lake Louise and grabbed a second-place finish in super-G to go with her downhill triumph. Tigers Jerseys China. I wasnt expecting to be as fast as I was in Lake Louise. The first race, being eighth place was about what I expected, she said. But I learned a lot from the first race and tried to improve, and both the second downhill and the super-G were good performances.Still, she thinks she can do much better.Im trying to be more comfortable with the speed and to be more aggressive. Downhill is a little bit farther along than super-G, and I definitely need more training. This weekend, hopefully Ill have good results like I did in Lake Louise. But its a process, coming back from two years of injury takes a bit of time.Vonn last raced slalom at Maribor, the day after her GS win, and the last time she scored points was when finishing eighth at Schladming, Austria, in March 2012.Although she did not finish her three slalom races before Schladming, she had previously shown good form in the discipline: Winning two races and securing three other podium finishes over a calendar year from November 2008-2009.Her reluctance to race slalom again is good news for World Cup leader Tina Maze. The 2013 overall champion competes in all five events, and the Slovenian heads into Val dIsere in superb form after winning a GS and placing second in slalom at the Swedish resort of Are last weekend. Its fun to change disciplines and try to be in front in each, Maze said. She leads overall with 560 points from Austrias Anna Fenninger on 303, while Vonn is eighth with 212. "This is my city," the Toronto native said upon his arrival Wednesday night. And the 35-year-old former league MVP says he is hoping to making 2014 a memorable year. MILWAUKEE -- Ryan Braun hadnt done much except get hit by a pitch. He made up for it with one swing in the bottom of the ninth. Braun was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning that scored a run and had an RBI single in the ninth, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. "I got beat up pretty good," Braun said. "Ill take it. Ill take them both." Braun thought the Rockies might pitch around him. He had already struck out twice and grounded out while Jonathan Lucroy had two hits and a RBI. "Typically, there is probably a higher likelihood that they pitch around me," Braun said. "I have been swinging so terribly and Luc has been swinging so great that that combination probably enticed them to at least come at me a little bit." Rockies manager Walt Weiss told reliever Matt Belisle to pitch carefully to Braun, but the strategy didnt work. "Ill always take responsibility for that one," Walt Weiss said. "Could have put him on. Its a tough situation for Mattie. Hes trying to get him to expand for a couple of pitches. The ball was maybe a little up. Braun went up and got it." Mark Reynolds led off the ninth with a single off Belisle (2-3) and advanced on a sacrifice by Jean Segura. Scooter Gennett pinch hit for Francisco Rodriguez (3-2) and was intentionally walked. The runners advanced on a passed ball by catcher Michael McKenry. After Rickie Weeks went down swinging, Braun drilled Belisles first pitch up the middle. "I dont think they were trying to throw it where he ended up throwing it," Braun said after collecting his first walk-off hit since 2011. Josh Rutledge tied the game when he homered off Rodriguez with one out in the ninth. Rutledge hit a 3-2 pitch that just barely cleared the wall in left for his second homer this season. Rodriguez was trying to help Kyle Lohse win his third straight start. Lohse has been victimized by five blown saves this season. He allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings and came within two outs of beating the Rockies for the second time in five days. Sunday, he pitched five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits in the Brewers 6-5 win in Colorado. Rodriguez leads the majorss with 27 saves, but this was his third blown save this season. Their NL-leading record (50-32) is the best in team history through 82 games. They have 13 games left to top the team record of 54 wins before the All-Star game. The Brewers also improved to 5-0 in the season series with the Rockies. "Its nice to be the first one to 50 wins, for sure," Braun said. "Were excited with the way that weve played so far, but theres still a lot of baseball left." The Brewers went ahead 2-1 in the seventh. Khris Davis doubled off Nick Masset to start the inning and Reynolds followed with a walk. Both advanced on a sacrifice by Segura. When Lyle Overbay was announced as the pinch hitter for Lohse, the Rockies brought in Rex Brothers. The Brewers countered with Martin Maldonado, who struck out swinging. After Weeks walked, Adam Ottavino came on to face Braun and hit him with the first pitch. Lucroy hit into a fielders choice for the third out. The Rockies scored their run in the seventh on a sacrifice by pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes that scored Rutledge. The Brewers scored first when Lucroy chopped an RBI single over second base off rookie Tyler Matzek in the sixth. Matzek went six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three. NOTES: The Rockies challenged the call when Carlos Gomez was ruled safe at second in the eighth inning. The decision was reversed in under 2 minutes. . SAO PAULO, Brazil -- With a subway strike put on hold, traffic in Brazils biggest city returned to its normal, congested nature Tuesday, but there was no guarantee service would be on for Thursdays opening of the World Cup. Wholesale Jerseys 2020 . Subway workers in Rio de Janeiro, meanwhile, were holding an assembly to vote on whether they would strike to demand higher wages, threatening to disrupt transportation. By late Tuesday night there was no announcement of their decision. Both situations are deeply worrying for World Cup organizers. Theyre counting on the subway systems to carry tens of thousands of fans to the games. The problem is a bigger worry for Sao Paulo, where the Itaquerao stadium is far from the hotel areas where most Cup tourists will stay. Union workers in Sao Paulo suspended their strike for two days, but planned to vote again Wednesday to decide whether to renew it. If they do, the subway system would grind to a halt on Thursday just as Brazils national soccer team faces Croatia in the Cups opening match. Sao Paulos Metropolitan Transportation agency said it has a "Plan B" -- yet refused to say exactly what that would entail. "We will only give details if and when the workers go on strike again," an agency official said, insisting he couldnt give his name because he wasnt allowed to speak to the press about the issue. A Sao Paulo labour court has fined the union $175,000 for the first four days of the strike and said it would add $220,000 for each additional day the work stoppage continued. The subway strike was the latest unrest to hit Brazil in the run-up to the World Cup. Teachers remain on strike in Rio and routinely block streets with rallies. Police in several cities have gone on strike, but are back at work now. There also has been a steady drumbeat of anti-government protests across Brazil blasting spending on the World Cup and demanding improvements in public services. The protests that began last year have diminished in size but not in frequency, and they also have disrupted traffic at times. Wholesale Jerseys Review . ORLANDO, Fla. Adidas Prophere NZ . -- As well as the Wizards have played at times in the past month, Washington coach Randy Wittman said he expected a team that had never been in a tight playoffs race to go through a few growing pains. After two tough losses to start the week, Washington showed the kind of bounce back ability it will take to survive if they do eventually make it there. John Wall survived a poor shooting night to score 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, Trevor Ariza added 21 points and 11 rebounds overall, and the Wizards hung on to beat the Orlando Magic 105-101 in overtime Friday night. "I wasnt making shots the whole game," Wall said. "The only shots it felt like I was making were 3s." The victory ends the Wizards two-game losing streak overall, and a seven-game road losing streak to the Magic. Bradley Beal added 20 points and a game-changing block before being helped off the court with sprained right ankle in overtime. Marcin Gortat finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds. "We realize that its about time for us to start winning," Gortat said. "Its about time to clinch that spot and get those wins, especially against teams like Orlando." Beals injury looked a lot more serious when it happened, with him having to be carried off the court by teammates. He is day-to-day. Orlando led by as many as nine in the second half before seeing that lead evaporate down the stretch. Tobias Harris had 21 points and Arron Afflalo finished with 18 to lead the Magic. Orlando has now lost five in a row and 11 of their last 14. "Its painful, it hurts, but you learn from it," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. Wall was fined $15,000 for inappropriate comments toward officials at the conclusion of the Wizards loss against Charlotte on Wednesday, and he had another run-in with the referees Friday. He was whistled for a technical foul in the third quarter for continuing to argue a non-foul call with referee Joey Crawford after Wall had walked back to the sideline huddle. It punctuated a mostly frustrating night for Wall, who finished just 7-of-18 shooting. But he picked it up when he had to. Jameer Nelson hit two free throws for the seventh lead-change of overtime to give the Magic a 97-96 lead. He got a steal on the Wizards next possession, but had his layup attempt blocked from behind by Beal. It was rebounded by Wall, who found Ariza in the corner for 3 to put Washington back up 99-97. "That was just hustle play, one that we definitely needed. John got a pass deflected, and my first instinct was to just go chase it down," Beal said. "He had a head start on me I guess I kind of baited him into it, and I was able to jump up and get it before it was (goaltending)." Soon after that play was when Beal went down with his ankle injury. It didnt stifle the Wizards momentum, though, with Wall sinking a jumper with less than 30 seconds to play. The Magic were forced to foul after a miss and the Wizards closed out the victory at the foul line. The Magic led 60-51 in the third quarter before the Wizards ended the period on a 16-6 spurt to take a 67-66 lead into the fourth. Orlando regained its footing, though, getting seven straight points from Victor Oladipo to start the quarter. After several lead changes Harris sank a pair of free throws to put the Magic in front at 85-79 with just 1:55 to play. Wall cut it to three with a 3-pointer, but Harris responded with tip-in on the other end. Wall was fouled on a 3-point attempt on the Wizards next trip down the floor, but got only two of his three free-throw attempts to fall. A missed jumper by Oladipo on the Magics ensuing touch gave it back to Washington and Wall then tied it at 87 with 10.6 remaining. Oladipo got up a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired in regulation, but it bounced off the side of the rim. But in the end, the Wizards felt as though Beals big block was the biggest reason they were able to walk out with their first victory in Orlando in over four years. "Hes making a name for himself," Gortat said. "Hes one of our rising stars." NOTES: Orlando dropped to 1-5 in overtime games this season. ... Orlando is 0-32 when being outrebounded this season. ... Only 37,000 people attended Sundays Brazilian league match at the Itaquerao in Sao Paulo, which wont hold a full crowd until the opening game between Brazil and Croatia on June 12. There were no major problems inside or outside the stadiium, but some fans still complained of difficulties accessing the venue because of heavy traffic and lack of adequate instructions by local authorities. One day after Bayern Munich clinched its 24th league title, two storied clubs found themselves facing an uphill battle to avoid being demoted. Nuremberg lifted itself from the relegation zone with its win after a brace by Josip Drmic. Freiburg stayed in 15th place, two points ahead of Hamburg, another former champion and the only club never to be relegated from the Bundesliga. A 16th-place finish means a playoff against a second-division team for a place in the top division. Stuttgart and Hamburg are three points above bottom Eintracht Braunschweig. Bayer Leverkusen won 3-1 in Augsburg to end a nine-game run without a victory in all competitions, Eintracht Frankfurt edged Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-0 and Hoffenheim edged 10-man Hannover 3-1.
